Google Top Ten 2012

We're a bit late on this one here this year, so, without further adeiu, here we go:

Top 10 Searches in 2012

#10: "boethiah" - I knew it. The Daedric Princes are finally on to me and they're trying to find out what I know about them!
#9: "lakota indian" - I guess this is still somehow a hot subject, though I can't fathom why. Nobody has been talking about them for years now.
#8: "far side comics" - All of this from one image in the gallery?
#7: "lakota indians" - That seems a bit sneaky. Two different rankings for the same thing?!?
#6: "you people of the south" site:iguanadons.net - Ok, that's just odd. This didn't even originate from a post. It was a comment in a 3 year old topic.
#5: "giskard oblivion drama" - Considering he's still out there and still spewing the same garbage as always, this is no longer surprising.
#4: "windhelm" - I wonder. Nope, Google has no insight on this. I didn't think Windhelm got mentioned much here.
#3: "afk mods" - Moved up in the world. I guess our name grew. Perhaps one day it will rise again as a separate entity.
#2: "lakota" - By far the most mileage of anything I've ever posted here. The flow of hits never seems to end with this one. And in 2012 not a single thing has changed.
#1: "punishment" - One of my political images, no doubt spurred on by 2012's biggest epic disaster.

One might note that for the first time since this blog's inception (cue the movie title hits) the name of the site is no longer featuring prominently. I don't know if that's because Google refined their algorithms or if it's just because visitors have figured out the wonder of bookmarks :)

Top 10 Visited Pages in 2012

#10. Alduin's Wall. One of Skyrim's most iconic images.
#9. Boethiah's image page. It must have struck a chord.
#8. Astrid's image page. I can see the appeal since the DB is a favorite faction among players, and this image captures it well. I'm sure being an attractive Nord female didn't hurt :P
#7. Windhelm. I guess this explains the number of hits for Windhelm searches.
#6. The Elder Scrolls category. No change here.
#5. Mod Theft and Steam Workshop. It looks like it peaked enough interest in the subject of copyright and modders' rights. Mission accomplished. Not bad for 6 months exposure.
#4: Classic Far Side. Well now we know I guess. This one image really does have that much of a draw.
#3: Giskard and False Accusations. Yeah, there's still a huge number of people hitting this page all the time. It doesn't help any that he's aggravating the situation again lately.
#2: Punishment. Goes hand in hand with the #1 search hit.
#1: Lakota Independence. Clearly not forgotten as I wondered about last year. Clearly. I mean, how much more mileage can this thing keep giving me?

As promised, I dropped consideration of the navbar links since it made no sense to bother reporting those. Needless to say, they made the actual #1 thru #5 slots again.

With the exception of Sandbox hits. Nowhere to be seen this year. Could be because it's been ages since another public release has been made. I ought to fix that.

Visitor statistics for the last 6 years:

In 2007: 6,567 unique visitors. 32,595 pageviews.
In 2008: 9,095 unique visitors. 31,276 pageviews.
In 2009: 10,022 unique visitors. 27,939 pageviews.
In 2010: 12,563 unique visitors. 74,087 pageviews.
In 2011: 17,237 unique visitors. 76,870 pageviews.
In 2012: 24,337 unique visitors. 77,651 pageviews.

Good growth. Last year I added a Twitter feed to the page. Referral tracking indicates it's had zero impact on things, so this growth appears largely organic. Thanks in no small part to Streisand Effect from the goon squad, who went from not a peep to my #1 referral source for ALL of 2012. Directly related to the mod theft topic. All in a span of less than 6 months. Ya'll are doing it wrong :P

Someone suggested not too long ago that I change my username here to match elsewhere to make it even easier to find. I've been considering it, but wonder if it would really make enough of a difference to matter. It's not like I'm making money off the site or something.

I'm going to guess that a lot of the hits for the "you people of the south" comment belong to me looking for very particular conversation threads using the quickest way I know how.

You know why I keep talking about needing comment search? This is why.

Yes, but unless you're telling me that you're personally responsible for over 2,000 search hits or something, I'm not buying that :P

And yes, I know, you do keep harping on adding comments to the search. I r lazy lizard.

Your very own code issue:' http://code.google.com/p/sandbox/issues/detail?id=5'

That does seem a touch excessive, yes. Maybe 50 or something. Though I'm going to guess the blog probably tosses out several pages, since I use the phrase enough. Still.

Also:

:alienjump:

While we're at it, because if I'm going to ask for features I may as well go big or go home, a way to search by comment author would be nice, too, insofar as I'm about to write a post and wish I could link some of my old comments I'm not going to now hunt down.

Why, yes, you should. ;) :P

Wow, I'd have really thought "the Streisand effect" was an extremely obscure term... On the other hand, I'm glad to see you're still experiencing regular growth here.

I don't think I'd do it. I expect that you've got a different name on other sites for some reason, even if the reason is no longer relevant, and we all know you here as Samson.

It really would be a nice feature to throw in, and would possibly be a big enough feature addition to merit a new release for Sandbox justification too. ;)

Indeed, though one wonders how you can do something or go home when you're doing the something in question from your home... ;)

Hey you closed comments before i could agree with Prettyfly that you are all nuts. LMAO.

Don't the 2nd amendment grand you the right to bear arms. Seems to me, you got 2 of them already, a left one and an right one, both are currently semi automatic, so, i think you all have enough arms as it is without the need to carry an M16 into the bargain.

Think about it, it is humour.

They're not closed unless you aren't logged in, which you were at the time.

Ah, but Fury, some guys have arms like Bluto from the Popeye comics while some guys have arms like Wimpy from the same comics.. and some are closer to being fully automatic while others barely qualify as single shot.. they're not all equal, let alone in a ranged fight. :P

Somehow, I just don't imagine the military being sent in by the government and deciding that, in fairness, since their opponents aren't armed as well, they'll just keep it to strictly fisticuffs.

I dunno, they might. Fisticuffs is a pretty great word. Might sell it.

Also I swear you'll get a response from me for reals when I have a moment to finish typing it. I did threaten a megapost.

Pretty sure, after having served myself, that it's just not the way the U.S. Military rolls.. :sniper: :nuke: <-- Generally, that's the way the military in this country rolls.

Yeah, it is a good word.. Now if only I could get them to agree to base my cessation upon a xvart tossing contest or some such instead of real violence. ;)

Ok, for the record, I'm scared now. I know how your posts can get under normal conditions, particularly in response to my own :innocent:, so if you're saying it's taking you that long to write up your response.. maybe we should hire you a publisher and a book binder to assist? :P

I sure hope he's not waiting on me to fix the comment search, because that would probably not be wise as I'm not in the mood to mess with code right now :P

Can't wait to see the twisted justifications that must be coming for why the 2nd Amendment is obsolete. I've heard pretty much every wack thing that's ever been put forth about that.

Unless whatever response this is is actually for THIS topic.... which would definitely be scary.

Also, Fury, the feds and the government in your state seem to be blaming each other for Queensland health cuts. Oh dear. I'm assuming that both factions have some responsibility, but I'm also a little bit confused.

Sorry, my bad.

LMAO, I knew you would get it.

Its all Campbell Newmans fault. As much as i like Can Do Campbell, and did vote for him, (Yes Samson i voted conservative), he has really pissed off a lot of people with all the government job cuts. Qld heath was a mess to begin with, so sacking them all does not bother me so much, if it does not effect service delivery.

I think Can Do has gone just a little too hard a little too quick, but that was his platform, and being Can Do, he will deliver on what he said he would, or die trying.

Anyone Windows 8 yet?

You act like I'd be surprised you voted conservative. I've told you before, you hold far too many conservative beliefs (even by US standards) for me to expect otherwise from you when it actually counts :P You put on a good show claiming to be a lib though.

No. No Windows 8 here. Hipster trash.

I got it on the download now, upgrade version is only $40 bucks online, so it was a very tempting proposition. Nice that they let me upgrade my hacked windows 7 to legit windows 8 without any dramas.

So true. But imagine if they were all English majors. Or led by Andrew Jackson. It would totally work.

And this line of thinking is why you're getting a megapost instead of one line sarcasm. As far as I know, I've made some allusions, but my gun stance remains opaque even to people who should know better. I aim to fix that.

Also I'm incredibly frustrated with pretty much everyone in the current debate and need to vent, so, you know.

Mostly it's taking forever because I'm sleeping bizzaro hours right now. Funny how that works.

Yeah, and overall I'm not wholly positive on it. Basically three things:

1. The parts that are like Windows 7 except slightly more refined are pretty good.

2. I understand that the Metro interface probably works well for tablets. For a desktop or laptop computing environment it's essentially sabotage - no start menu is utterly inexplicable and degrades usability, having to adapt to touch gestures to do a lot of things doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense, and there are a number of useful Windows 7 features they just flat out removed. At the very minimum I'd think you need a start menu replacement like Start8 or Classic Shell, but how you stop yourself from getting randomly ambushed by full screen Metro apps you can't close is somewhat unknown to me.

3. While the new Metro skinning that replaced Aero (probably the best skin of all time for Windows) isn't as horrible looking as screenshots may lead you to believe, you should make no mistake that it's still pretty atrocious, looks like it was designed by and for kindergarteners, and is first and foremost a skin for phones and tablets. To anyone used to aesthetically pleasing modern UIs, Metro is pretty much the equivilent of a cockpunch.

Shorter me.

Honestly, if I had Windows 7 I'd pretty much stick with it. I only have Windows 8 because new laptop.

Oh, and speaking of politics topics, might I note that the one we've been using has almost 400 comments and is from September. We could probably use a new politics open thread or something.

In the interim, enjoy this:

Agreed, there has been plenty going on to warrant a new thread.

Thanks for your impressions on Win8 Dwip. I guess like everything new it will take some time to get used to, much the same as i was lost when XP became 7. However, having used an Andriod tablet for sometime now mostly for downloading porn, i mean Big Bang Theory and other such TV shows to watch, i have gotten used to the no start menu sort of thing and jumping to a big list off apps to find the one i want to use.

I think for me in this regard, the jump from 7 to 8 will be much more intuitive because of the tablet experience already under my belt and feeling rather comfortable in that environment. Mostly when i think about my computing etc, i mainly use only a handful of applications, so having those on a nice and tidy start window will be kind of cool. The few things i use rarely i can link to the desktop and, well, all the other crap just dont matter.

How often do you really need to pull up computer management, or console or Internet Spades or pretty much everything else in the start menu. If only MS servers were not on some backwater of the internet, this download it taking an eternity and i really want to have it installed and be playing with it right now.

Movie download at 2meg a second, Win8 50kb a second. Oh please. Guess i will be reading a book tonight instead of playing Win8.

I could totally go for some goddamn katanas.

Also, by open thread, I don't even mean a real post if you don't want - just give us a comment thread to blather in.

As far as Windows 8, it really does depend on what you're doing with it. If you're doing the Facebook/email/web surfing thing, it's basically fine. If you expect to be doing a lot of work with your computer, like what Samson or I do, it's pretty unworkable.

And now I have a megapost for Conner once we get our new thread. I apparently have a lot to say about guns.

You are not going to verbally shoot us all down are you, using some kind of textual shot gun?

:sniper:

You know Dwip, i kind of like windows 8. It seems to be nice and slick rather than kind of clunky like 7 was. I guess it just suits how i like to use the computer more so than it does for you. And the fact that its only $40 for the pro version makes it all the better also.

The Katanas are a great idea. My main objection against guns, other than for sports and hunting, is the way they empower an angry fat blob who bought a gun last week, to be able to mess with impunity with a warrior who has spent a lifetime training in the art of being 'not to be messed with'.
