Kim Jong Dead
As a result, South Korea, China, and the US are all on military alert. Probably rightly so since the crazy son might just want to do something dumb to assert himself.
Maybe the world will get lucky and the North Koreans will wake up, but that doesn't seem likely. It's going to take a miracle to get those people dragged screaming into the 21st century.
RIP United States of America
July 1776 - November 2012.
Yeah King Kong Kill is much worse than his father ever was.
Makes ou wonder yeah, those people have had nothing but abuse for 50 years but they are happy to be eating hay and weed seeds and die total abject poverty, than to take up arms and die in the name of freedom. Some people just do not want liberation.
That said, a conventional war against North Korea would be suicide. They would be fighting as religious fanatics in defense of their god. That's far, FAR worse than a free man defending his home from invaders.
I didn't like 1984 that much, but North Korea certainly has some parallels with it, which would explain why they haven't had any sort of revolution. As Samson effectively pointed out. Maybe once China loosens up the south might be able to move in and take over, but I don't see that coming anytime soon.
The best hope for North Korea, I would guess, is that Kim Jong Un might realize that if you open up to the outside world and loosen the communist restraints, he can become more powerful, with the rest of the country benefiting along the way. Or he might do something dumb to assert himself. Fallout: South Korea, anyone? (actually, I was under the impression that Kim Jong Un was effectively already in control anyway, but who knows)
Also, that was a little surprising. Christopher Hitchens, I expected. Kim Jong Il maybe not so much.
Assuming that such terrible people are extreme, utterly unusual and outside normal parameters may give us the reassuring feeling that it couldn't possible happen here, or happen again. What if they're not? What if many people could become a horrible dictator given the wrong circumstances?
(Some of these guys were obviously less than entirely sane. Hitler probably had a war trauma after 4 years in the trenches, and was obsessed with the injustice of the treaty of Versailles. His rants resonated with a population that had a war trauma and was obsessed with the injustice of the treaty of Versailles. Had he been born in Costa Rica in stead, perhaps he would have been locally known as that postcard painter with a chip on his shoulder, he would certainly not have been noteworthy. )
Gaddafi's an interesting case. I remember listening a veteran American diplomat who said something along the line of 'when Gaddafi came into power he was twenty seven, just like me. And when your twenty seven you've got a lot of testosterone pumping around your body and a lot of crazy ideas in your head. And while I came to realize that my crazy idea's just weren't going to happen, Gaddafi got use to the idea that no-one was going to say no to him.' Perhaps he was just a bit nuts in the first place though.
I was fairly surprised by just how much the 'dear leader' pops up everywhere. If you consider the worship of him a religion, then North Korea is easily the most religious nation in existence.
