Aliens vs Predator: Requiem

We pick up right where AvP left off as the predator ship is leaving orbit and the final scene is expanded on slightly to show the alien-predatory hybrid popping out from the body they brought on board. Things quickly devolve out of control though and the predator ship crash lands back on planet Earth in the mountains outside of Gunnison Colorado. From there all hell breaks loose as our face hugging friends escape the wreckage and begin causing all sorts of trouble.

Soon after we get to see a brief glimpse of what I'm assuming was the predator home world. It looked every bit as dark and scary and foreboding as one might expect from a race of alien hunters. As the predator who responds to the distress signal from the downed ship arrived, we get to see some interesting new toys he's brought with him, along with the old familiar ones. During one of the many battle scenes between the aliens and the predator, we get to see one of these nifty new toys used - a laser device that anchors itself to the walls and projects a net which the aliens cannot pass backward through. It also appears to contain the blasts from the predator's favorite shoulder mounted energy gun.

As one might expect, once the action reaches the populated areas of town, there's plenty of death and gore to go around as people begin to panic and try to escape their fates. Much of the violence in this movie is gratuitous gore that could just as easily have been left out while still telling the story, so if you've got kids you were thinking about bringing along, don't. It's best if they stay out of this. As is typical of the predator/alien movies, a small group of people begin to emerge as our heroes of the day. There's also a growing hint as time moves along that the government knows more than they're telling people. Keep an eye out for obvious Easter Egg moments as well. There might have been more than the one I noticed when it happened.

Overall, if you're a fan of the Alien and Predator movies, and especially if you're a fan of Alien vs Predator, you need to go see Requiem. Given the niche market it appeals to it may not be in theaters for very long. This is definitely one that requires the theater experience to get the most out of it.

2007 took its time becoming a great movie season, waiting until the last two months to release most of the best movies of the year. From the look of things, they're planning to spread the good stuff out across more of 2008 than just the routine summer blockbuster season as well.

Up next in movie plans:

Cloverfield - January 18, 2008.
Jumper - February 2008. This is one I haven't seen previews of before and looks like it should be VERY cool.
"It is pointless to resist, my son." -- Darth Vader
"Resistance is futile." -- The Borg
"Mother's coming for me in the dragon ships. I don't like these itchy clothes, but I have to wear them or it frightens the fish." -- Thurindil

Well. I guess that's that then.
