Change

In all things, there is change. This site is no exception. So it seemed fitting enough to invoke Obama's image for this since he's at least partly to blame for why it's being done. Come on now, you knew I had to get that in there somehow, right? :P

Some of you may already be aware of this. Some may not. After 10+ years of self-hosting, it is time to move on. Due to circumstances I won't go into here, it has become necessary to transplant this blog and other sites over to offsite hosting. Why you might ask? Simple. It's time to get out of the stone age and move to fiber optic. The primary reason being that bandwidth on my existing DSL line is saturated 24/7 due to relentless attacks from Chinese and Russian spammers who seem to have gotten the idea that I'm hiding something important from them. Needless to say, this has made trying to use the internet a real pain in the ass. This isn't exactly news to some of you either. I've been complaining about it regularly for some time now.

There is also an economic reality that has finally done its damage. There is not enough revenue being generated from server operations to keep things running any longer, and that's always been one of the conditions I placed on eventually moving out. So once the transition to FiOS is underway I will no longer be providing hosting here. Depending on how things go, and if existing clients are agreeable, I will see about activating a VPS with Linode and transferring MUD hosting operations there under the same pricing plans. This isn't looking very likely right now though due to the lack of responses.

This blog, the AFKMods site, and the Unique Landscapes site have been transferred to my Dynadot account. They provide the domain names and have a very reasonable $5/mo hosting plan that will suit me fine. The SmaugMuds.org site will be transferred over to Kayle's VPS along with the SVN repositories for the codebases. The remaining two sites, PDNS-Admin and QSF Portal, will be shut down. Al further support for those projects will be directed to the Google Code sites.

Assuming I am not able to swing opening a VPS, all service to the arthmoor.com domain will terminate. This includes email, web, hosting, whatever. There will be time enough given to allow people to vacate but this will not extend past the end of April.

All unused domains after the transitions are done will be left to the mercy of the internet. I guess if you're a ruthless domain spammer, your opportunity will be knocking shortly.

I had planned for this announcement to be visible before the move, but hey, things didn't quite play along. So if you're reading this now then the iguanadons.net domain has already been fully transferred.

Well. I guess that's that then.

But is it change we can believe in, I wonder.

For the curious, this will also be impacting my blog as well. Once I figure out what I'm doing, I'll discuss it over there.

It's going to have to be. Unless something happens later to cause bandwidth to get overrun or something. I very much doubt this will happen though.

There are of course the curious among us who will wonder what your new domain is :P

Always good to keep things moving forward, right?

And move forward they shall. It's official now. On April 15th, I leave the stone age for the modern goodness of fiber optic internet.

We need Joe schmo for pres. Someone with common sense instead hidden agendas.

The only problem with that, Vladaar, is even if someone gets elected with common sense; they pick up hidden agendas while in office.
Back to the topic at hand:
I guess how good the fiber optic internet is depends on what the fibers are attached to.

They'll be attached to Verizon FiOS at 35Mbit both ways. Had the bundle come with a 50/50 plan that would have been quite tempting, but alas, it didn't.

Hi Vladaar, how about Ficus for President

Someday, like 10 years from now, FiOs will be available where I live. :sigh: Then again, apparently, I'm moving soon, so maybe they've invented that in Nebraska.

General question. Is the blog running smoother and less laggy than before? Maybe things are just going to hell that much faster here than before, but it sure seems like it's running even slower than normal connections to other places.

My rubbish school internet proxy doesn't like the site anymore and can't even process it, unless you go through their abominable thin client system. The problem would be coming from the rubbish way the entire thing is set up though so it shouldn't be a reason to concern you.

On my home connection things seem to be working fine though.

No worries The Fury... That Bill Ayres guy is advocating all countries get to vote on U.S. President. Once the unions start massive protests here and destroy our Republic you might get to vote. One world govt.

Even if the entire world had the chance to vote for the US president, Voter turn out would still remain poor, and everyone would continue to whine. LOL

Here and AFK Mods seem to be doing relatively ok - only a couple of random times they were unloadable, and only laggy some of the time. On my end, it's pretty laggy, and I get pretty much constant crashes in my control panel which would seem to be something somewhere running out of memory or the like. Which I am, of course, disenchanted by.

I don't blame you. I'm not happy with the results either, but what else is there? Hopping around trying out different hosting options will get uber-expensive. Probably goes without saying that I don't like not having control over the setup either. Dynadot wants nothing to do with a PHP 5.3 update despite 5.2 being filled with deprecated functions and security issues that only got fixed in 5.3. They're apparently paranoid about it or something.

On the good news front though, the fiber optic cabling company just left. They strung the feed from the FiOS box down the street over to the hookups in the back yard. One hurdle lept.

Sorry guys, broke the stuff again, but no more lag at least, and I get my PHP 5.3 now. Linode FTW, Dynadot Hosting FTL.

Well I just submitted a review for DSL Extreme over at dslreports.com and then decided to go read some flame threads in their forum. Yeah, I'm bored and not motivated to do much else right now :P

Good lord. I may be jumping ship at just the right time it seems. A whole lot of people furious with their newly outsourced (apparently to India) tier 1 tech support. Some poor guy related a story about being on hold to speak to tier 2 for TWO HOURS. I'd have just said to hell with it and driven to their office instead.

Color me biased but I've never had an issue with these guys outside of the usual network outages that have never lasted long enough to matter. I certainly haven't had to call their techs in the last 2-3 years so I guess I haven't seen the new face of the company. The hand is writing on the wall, it would seem they're consigning themselves to Oblivion.

Triple post!

If you're looking for the AFK Mods website, I've changed the subdomain for it. You can now reach it at: http://afkmods.iguanadons.net

Or, at least you'll be able to once the subdomain propagates through the DNS system.

Wow. Quad post. That almost never happens. With nearly all traffic shunted off my local network, here's a speed test. Grade D+? I had no idea :innocent:

Not going for the quint-post. Due to what can only be described as a colossal fuckup on the part of my still current ISP, both server IPs were dropped from the routing tables rather than performing the "remove reverse DNS lookup" I had asked for. So for the first time in years, other than hardware failures, both of the MUD hosting boxes are now offline and powered down. I feel strange somehow.

Funny thing is, i do get better speeds on downloads, it will cap out on my upper speed limit of 20 megs at times.

Yep, don't worry, I'll be sure and post new numbers first thing after the FiOS connection is up and running :)

Sad part is that the reading I took was as good as it'll ever get here on DSL. You at least still have more than half your bandwidth available.

You do not have faster DSL options?

On a hijack note GO Australia

Well there's a 6Mbit plan I could have gotten, but that still only has 768Kb/s upload. Problem with that is it's not stable. I had that before with Speakeasy and it was down more than it was up. Turned out the line quality isn't good enough despite being only 4,000 feet from the CO.

There's ADSL2+ but they want $140/mo for a 15/1 plan on that and I wasn't willing to get ripped off.

Re: Military thing, if they can handle the physical requirements, go for it.

@Fury; that's the reason I couldn't be bothered to watch Q&A last night.

Serious?

I think i pay about 60 p/m for adsl2 20/1, about the only thing that i wish they would do is open up the upload side some more to like 2meg, then it would be truly useful for a lot of other purposes.

4,000 feet from the CO.

I am 700 meters, so whats that about 2100 feet, i get perfect sync up on both up and down, but i am going to order a line test because i do have a lot of packet loss, we have only just moved into this house in the last couple of weeks and its the first time we have had adls2, so its all new, prior to that we had 8/.512 adsl1.
