Farewell SG-1

So I was poking around the net Sunday night when I ran across the news that Stargate SG1 is being cancelled. Apparently the Sci-Fi channel decided not to renew for Season 11. Well I'm sure I don't need to tell you that this just plain sucks. But it's typical of the Hollywood elite mentality. Canceling a great show just because of back room politics over licensing. The ratings for the show were still very high even.

So what are they replacing it with you might ask? Well. The ECW. If you haven't guessed by the cheesy 3 letter name yet, it's wrestling. As if we needed yet another wrestling show on TV. If I seriously wanted to watch a bunch of boneheads bashing each other in the skull with chairs, I could have gone to plenty of other stations to get it.

As far as I can see, this is going to be the death of the Sci-Fi channel. There's not much else on there that I or anyone else I know watches other than Battlestar Galactica, Stargate Atlantis, and Dr. Who. And the only reason many of us watch Dr. Who is because it's all that's on TV in general before Galactica comes on. They really have nothing else worthwhile in their lineup. Except maybe Eureka, but they've been in reruns now longer than the season was to begin with, which is generally a very bad sign. Does anyone even watch any of their ridiculous creature movies? And what's the deal with just cutting things off right in the middle of the whole Ori thing? Can't they at least resolve the dangling plotline?

The only glimmer of hope in all this is that Stargate Atlantis is being renewed for another season, but I don't have high hopes that it will be able to stand on its own. I'm even less hopeful of the supposed 3rd Stargate series in the works. MGM and their silly plan to sell direct to video DVDs of the SG-1 series is just plain daft. Though I admit I may be willing to buy these, it would be little more than buying a 2 hour episode of the show. I'd much prefer to see them do theater releases. But that's just me.

You'd think Sci-Fi would have learned their lesson after the uproar they caused when Farscape got axed.
"It is pointless to resist, my son." -- Darth Vader
"Resistance is futile." -- The Borg
"Mother's coming for me in the dragon ships. I don't like these itchy clothes, but I have to wear them or it frightens the fish." -- Thurindil

Well. I guess that's that then.

Dragona and I had heard about this nearly a year ago, but at the time there was also talk of MGM or WB buying the rights to SG1 to continue it elsewhere, has that changed?

Yes. According to the site I linked here, MGM only mentions that they plan to release some direct to DVD movies featuring the SG-1 crew. Mainly to tie off the loose ends Sci-Fi is going to leave behind. They made no mention of buying the rights to the show. Apparently they wouldn't have to since it's theirs anyway.

I hadn't heard anything about WB being interested, but hey. We can hope. Maybe MGM will sell it to them. :)
