National Treasure: Book of Secrets

The end of the year has been full of all kinds of good movies. Those of you who enjoy treasure adventure movies will want to go see National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

During a speech, Benjamin Franklin Gates is approached by a man from the audience claiming to have a page from the diary of John Wilkes Booth, assassin who killed President Lincoln. What follows is a grand conspiracy involving everyone up to and including the president. So of course, Gates comes up with the insane plan to kidnap the President. Clue after clue, Gates manages to keep one step ahead of those who would stop him. The hunt for answers only brings about more questions as an even more ancient secret is uncovered. Spanning two continents and hundreds of years of history, plenty of adventure awaits.

Of course, what treasure hunt movie wouldn't be full of devious traps, wicked puzzles, cryptic ciphers, and unknown historical tidbits? Book of Secrets has plenty of those to go around. Some of them quite sinister. From the trailer available on imdb, you catch a glimpse of one of the coolest ones I've seen. Without giving too much away, there's a large square stone slab precision mounted on a central swivel that requires everyone on it to be balanced very carefully, lest the whole thing fall into what's supposed to be a deep dark chasm. There are also plenty of interesting clues left in plain sight for those who would follow the trail to its end.

So if you're looking for a fun movie with plenty of action and adventure without the gratuitous violence and foul language that you usually get, go see this movie. Well worth your time. Yet another fine addition to the DVD collection when it's available.

On the horizon:

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem - Releases Christmas Day. I'll likely wait for the weekend though.
Cloverfield - This one looks really good from the trailer I saw at Beowulf. January 18, 2008.
"It is pointless to resist, my son." -- Darth Vader
"Resistance is futile." -- The Borg
"Mother's coming for me in the dragon ships. I don't like these itchy clothes, but I have to wear them or it frightens the fish." -- Thurindil

Well. I guess that's that then.
