Osama bin Laden DEAD!

It's been nearly 10 years, two wars, and countless lives later, but tonight the world celebrates as Osama bin Laden lies dead by our hand. It was a well executed and elaborate covert military operation carried out by US Delta Force Rangers deep inside Pakistan.

Ok, so we actually got the guy last week, but were conducting a DNA test on the remains to confirm the identity. All the same, it's about time we got him. Kudos to our troops, to the Afghan people, the Pakistanis, and yes, to president Obama as well for a successful operation.

Now we'll be bring the guys home soon, right? :P

Well. I guess that's that then.

Suck it Bin Laden.

This is a monumentous day,

Given to understand it was primarily SEALs, but important thing is that a lot of hard-working, unsung folks worked a long time to get the fucker, and get him they did. Good riddance.

Also given to understand that no Pakistanis were involved in the op, which, well, fuck those guys anyway.

Kudos from the Canadians. Good job.

Yeah, so it would seem. Screw the Pakistanis then. Whole lotta uber-secrecy involved for them to be able to keep a lid on this for a whole week while they processed the DNA test.

Fox was saying Delta Force. Whoever it was, they deserve a nice long vacation in Hawaii or something.

Ok, so scratch that reference to the DNA thing. Fox stealth edited their story on me. Apparently we did in fact just get bin Laden tonight.

An Obama Osama is worth two from the Bush. hehe see what i did there :)

Kudos to the guys who did this...but...I don't think this is going to help you to much in terms of the situation in Afghanistan.

I mean, at the most, as far as the insurgents are concerned, he's just another commander, if anything. And they've lost commanders before without collapsing and I don't think this is likely to change much.

BUT...It is a good symbolic victory, and justice well served to a brutal foe.

Lets hope this isn't a signal to the Muslim extremists in Pakistan to begin a revolution, for that matter though. If that happens then shits on.

You Amerifags are such tools! He's been dead for 10 years!

Well that's an interesting find there Anon.

@prettyfly: The head of the snake has been cut off. Their network will fall into disarray and become far less effective than it was. Other commanders weren't as important because all they did was lead local cells.

Think of it like killing a colonel. Sure, that's disruptive, kill a general and you generate an internal shitstorm. Kill the president and you have mass chaos. We just killed their president.

BUT...It is a good symbolic victory

It is all pretty good for Obama stock, will certainly help with his re-election plans. But what it has done for the American people might be priceless, moral will go up, and along with it, maybe the economy, which can only be a good thing.

FOr Al Queda, well it means shit really, they have no top down leadership like any conventional organization and individual cells pretty much do whatever they like, when they like.

Congrats tho to everyone in the US, this must be a really big deal to a lot of people.

At least that's over. :unclesam:

@ Prettyfly- My personal opinion is he is/was a spokes-model with no actual authority whatever. That said, his death would have a profound effect on the morale of the enemy. It's obviously having an effect on people that post to this blog.

@ Samson- Let's not jump to conclusions. Whichever of the five people that were always with him that takes over might actually be a more effective leader.
Oh, and-
Kill a Colonel-His unit mourns for a half-hour; then business as usual with the next guy in line.
Kill a General-Flag is half-mast, his unit mourns for a half-hour, then business as usual with the next guy in line.
Kill a President-Half the country mourns, the other half is relieved, everything closes for a day; Flag is half mast then business as usual with the next guy in line.

I find it hilarious how we dumped him in the ocean. So much for evidence.

Conspiracy theorists are out in force claiming he's not actually dead and that the whole burial at sea thing is just convenient cover for it.

No one is claiming he's not dead, but no one will believe we actually got him if they never release any evidence. They've said now they won't release photographs - I'll hold my breath. :headbang:

I'm willing to go with what they're saying, even if we don't have irrefutable proof. I can't see any reason why they would be lying on this one, and I can't see any reason to argue that its a hoax anyway.

It's not exactly like we're going to have a state funeral for the guy, is it?
Still, it doesn't make sense to dump his body in the ocean, either. As far as irrefutable proof-there's no such thing. The best you can get is what a reasonable, informed, person would accept as proof.

Who gets the $3 mil?

Conspiracy theorists are out in force claiming he's not actually dead and that the whole burial at sea thing is just convenient cover for it.

But they are all Idiots, aren't they.

They are. Unless they turn out to be right.

I mean, wouldn't you get some solid irrefutable proof and release it to the public? Pictures of the body, you know, that sort of thing. I would, Islamic tradition be damned. They already hate us, they're certainly not going to forgive us just because we gave Osama a proper burial.

Sometimes the things these guys do just make you wonder. Spend 10 years of our blood and treasure hunting this guy down and don't bother getting pictures and shit. All it does is fuel the fires. Unless it's what they wanted to do. Fuel the fires. Wouldn't put it past him, but whatever.

That's two down. Now all we have to do is wipe Iran off the map and we're done :)

They are. Unless they turn out to be right.

For sure, but all they have is conjecture, conjecture does not, IMO, count for shit.

I mean, wouldn't you get some solid irrefutable proof and release it to the public?

I think they should release the DNA evidence, that is something that is totally solid. People will come up with all sorts of conjecture if a photo is released, take Sadam when they finally got him, he looked nothing like any picture that i had ever seen of him, and it was not until Sadam did a Sadam in the trial that it was clear to me it was actually him.

Independently verified DNA reports would be more than enough evidence I think to satisfy all but the most die hard loons, who would still say its been faked even if they pulled the trigger themselves.

That's two down. Now all we have to do is wipe Iran off the map and we're done :)

Me, i would like to see NK go first, Kim Jong Ill and his son Ding Dong Dill are repressive tyrants who have abused their people for 50 odd years, they, IMO represent everything that is evil in the world, Iran on the other hand, treats its people somewhat better, but might seem to be dangerous because of the nuke issue, personally, i think the welfare of the civilians in NK is a much more pressing issue that needs to be dealt with.

Feel free to lobby your government to go take NK down. Iran is a far bigger threat to us at the moment and I think we should worry more about our own asses first for a change.

Al Qaeda and their hypothesized "dirty nuke" is still a bigger threat than Iran.

Hawaii and parts of Alaska are within range of NK missiles today. NK has tested nukes. The actions of the entire state of North Korea depend on the whims of one old, dying man with nothing left to lose.

Now Iran on the other hand has no nukes, and no missiles capable of reaching NATO territory beyond Turkey. It's also a democracy of sorts (though the senate is not elected), at least enough of a democracy to ensure that no one person is in charge of everything. President Ahmadinenotgnnaworkhereanymore went on strike the other day, because another branch of government refused to do what he asked.

Iran could become a functioning democracy with some relatively minor reforms (take the Islamic out of the Islamic Republic, as my Iranian boss calls it)

I don't agree that Iran is the bigger threat right now, and wiping the entire country off the map wouldn't necessarily be a good thing, imo...

Dirty nukes are an urban legend. There is no low-tech way of contaminating a large area with dangerous levels of radiation. I worry more about terror attacks with conventional explosives in crowded public places, as it's a proven tactic terrorists actually have been using on a regular basis all over the world in the past decade or two.

There might be ways to contaminate a large area with low level radiation, but beyond the public's irrational fear of radio activity, that doesn't actually do all that much harm.
