Sandbox Software

Ok. After having played around with it and gotten things into a working condition that most people would find passable, I've put up a fork of the Sandbox 1.0 code. It's over in the downloads section.

Now before anyone decided to attack me on this, I'm sure most people would agree that giving the author several months to go ahead with a release after the final beta period wound down is pretty reasonable. The one shining quality of open source being that if a project you happen to like is dormant or dead, you can revive it. The project seemed a bit dead to me. I could be wrong, but that's how I see it.

As per the licensing, I have notified Kiasyn of my intentions to release this here. What I'm hoping for at best is that he'll release what I sent him through the official site, since I really don't want to step on his toes. In the meantime the code at least stands a small chance of spreading to other sites. Those of us who are fans can at least hope it generates a bit of interest from people and in turn those people offer up suggestions for improvement and perhaps some new features as well.

If you're interested in helping development, stroll on over to since that's where the official forum resides.

I'm especially interested in the following:

* A proper plugin architecture. Not all features are agreeable to everyone afterall.
* SEO friendly URL support. Preferably without having to manually intervene to accomplish it.
* Safe HTML in blog comments. Because BBCODE isn't always sufficient.
* Custom BBCODE. Something like what phpbb3 has. Yes, it's got a couple redeeming qualities :)

Others have expressed interest in:

* Event calendar.
* A guestbook.
* A pastebin like Kiasyn has on his Sandbox site.
* Blog polls.
* Graphical emoticons.
* A "proper" blog roll. I'm not a huge blog nut, someone feel free to comment on this one.
* Guest administrators ( or authors? ) with limited privileges.
"It is pointless to resist, my son." -- Darth Vader
"Resistance is futile." -- The Borg
"Mother's coming for me in the dragon ships. I don't like these itchy clothes, but I have to wear them or it frightens the fish." -- Thurindil

Well. I guess that's that then.

I've also posted the updated Akismet addition that goes with 1.0. Due to potential licensing conflicts I felt it best to keep them apart.

I will also be releasing some kind of maintenance update in the near future with minor bugs and such fixed up. Even in revival nothing goes quite like you hope :P

Personally, I can't comment on the blog roll thing because I wouldn't know a proper one if I bit it.. I know a spring roll is meatless while an egg roll has meat, that's about the sum of my roll knowledge...

As for the rest, I really thought he was closer to where he wanted to be before his last version change, but I'll take a look at what we're working with and see if I can make any positive contributions. It's a nice program, and a great idea, overall, and I'd actually like to see it succeed.
