Smaug 1.8

So. After 10 years or so they've gone and done it again. Smaug 1.8 is available for download. It comes with the promise of new features, bugfixes, and other things one might expect after so long. While I'm glad to see that they're still interested, at first glance there are a couple of indications that they haven't paid enough attention to issues from the past. Mainly in that they are STILL distributing it with the old GPL version of the IMC2 code. The release notice on the SML also seemed to indicate a few things should be there which don't appear to be, such as the custom slays.

Which brings us to the question of the day: Bug fixes. The release notice says they've fixed a number of them, but there's no record of what they were. Even though the FUSS project may not be terribly organized, it does at least provide a written record of everything that was done to it back to very near the beginning. This means of course that in order to figure out what was fixed, one must run a diff on the code to see. It's also not terribly encouraging that on the same day it was out, a crash bug when quitting a character cropped up. The details of it are not know just yet other than the pfile affected was PK'd shortly before.

Still, overall it should be a boost to the Smaug community that hasn't seen any official releases in nearly 10 years. Just goes to show you there are still some surprises left in the community :)

Well. I guess that's that then.

I think it's awesome that they finally decided to release an update, but given the dates that were brought up in the release notice, and the other problems already discovered about the new release, I think they really could have released this one some time back and perhaps been a bit nicer about providing a fix list.

I think Kiasyn suggested a new branch of FUSS coming out of this, and I don't think we're going to find solid merit in that. If anything, what I think would be more appropriate at this point for the FUSS brach of Smaug's development would be for us to figure out what's been added to Smaug 1.8 and add those features (with actual fixes) to the FUSS package and call it SmaugFUSS 1.8, but that's just my two cents. ;)

In my opinion, MUDs should die. rd_parse deserves it.
