Swine Flu Scam Email

You have received this e-mail because of the launching of State Vaccination H1N1 Program.

You need to create your personal H1N1 (swine flu) Vaccination Profile on the cdc.gov website. The Vaccination is not obligatory, but every person that has reached the age of 18 has to have his personal Vaccination Profile on the cdc.gov site. This profile has to be created both for the vaccinated people and the not-vaccinated ones. This profile is used for the registering system of vaccinated and not-vaccinated people.

This rather official sounding email showed up in my inbox today. Not once. Not twice, but a grand total of four times so far, and I'm expecting it won't stop anytime soon. It is very clearly a hoax email, but people who aren't quite as savvy with the fact that the CDC has no authority to compel this kind of information may fall for it. Oddly enough, their "link" isn't even a link. It's just the words. So there's apparently nowhere to even go. Since the email scam seems to have originated in China (surprised?) they probably don't realize the kind of Gestapo feel something like this has. They live that way and think nothing of it.

The sad part is, with our current administration, something like this might almost be real enough to be attempted. Given the systematic dismantling of our rights under a liberal Congress and an Obama presidency I'd hardly be surprised to one day find an official letter in the mail from whichever branch of the Executive would be in charge of this. I wouldn't be surprised if someone in Washington right now is trying to amend the healthcare bill to include provisions like this. After all, the whole Swine Flu scare is bogus, but they're still desperately trying to convince everyone it's the next big killer disease. Nevermind the fact that seasonal flu has killed 10x the number of people so far this year, like it always does.

Anyway, I thought this would make for interesting reading. If only to laugh at the stupidity of scammers. Play on our fears all you like, but it usually helps if your scams have working links :)

Well. I guess that's that then.

It would seem that someone is rather late to the party with a swine flu scam, like if your going to do something like that, wouldnt you do it at the height of news coverage, not when its a distant memory for most people. The day the GOV has my email and starts using it to send out stupid things like you have to get vaccinated (No i fucking dont and no i fucking wont!) is the day that i find myself a new country to live in, one that is not forcing me to do shit i dont want to, just cause they say so. Im thinking some 3rd world nation in the pacific ocean with hot looking semi nude women would suit me fine, ju8st as long as its not going underwater because of climate change.

Peace out all.

The various errors in sentence construction and word choice make it fail, however. Not government like at all.

Then again, I just got some state stuff today that had my name wrong, so, you know. Maybe. Maybe not.

Oh I don't know, I've seen legitimate government documents that were worded far more badly than that, with more typos as well. (If you believe that our government does a great job of watching their wording and such, don't go reading IRS publications...) But the lack of a functional link and the fact that it's coming as unsolicited email pretty much rule out any likelihood of intelligent members of the populace from falling for it. As Samson said, it sounds pretty reasonable given the current regime's policy climate otherwise. (Though I believe the CDC does actually have the authority to compel something like this if they can prove to the rest of the government that it's a genuine epidemic situation but they'd also have military backing them up on the effort and they'd be going door to door rather than contacting people via email under those circumstances.)
