The Other Shoe

Well. As they say, the other shoe has dropped. I've seen bits and pieces here and there wondering, speculating, rumoring, that if I don't drop AFKMud I'm not really attempting to cut ties to the "MUD Community". Well, stop speculating. Stop expecting this is just a phase to be ignored and that I'll be back like nothing happened in a month. As I'm sure you can guess by now, we're past that point.

Six years ago, as Alsherok lay bleeding, dying from the loss of life blood ( players ) the decision was made to release our codebase in a form that would be acceptable for public use. So I set out to clean things up and branch a copy off of Alsherok so we could continue to develop as we saw fit without giving away what little uniqueness we wanted to keep. At first this was met with wide enthusiasm. People loved it. Samson was releasing an entire codebase after years of development and debugging. It was bound for greatness and glory. Or, at least that's what people told me.

Time went on, and as things continued to roll on, C++ was more and more on the minds of people. AFKMud adapted. A conversion project was started to get it switched over as much as was possible to doing things in C++. This project sucked away a hell of a lot of time. Perhaps too much. The end result never did come to fruition. People grew impatient. I grew steadily less interested in it. And the community spirit which once drove the hobby was slowly being drained away by the massive influx of "gimmie gimmie gimmie NOW NOW NOW" players, builders, and admins. Needless to say these types of people have no patience. They want everything handed to them yesterday. They refuse to wait for anything. They're a product of a larger problem in this country, but I digress.

Lately it seems no matter what I do, what I say, who I say it to, or why it's said, people attack me. Sometimes for the words themselves. Sometimes to seize upon an opportunity to pile on. Sometimes just because they're dicks and it's what they do. This whole attitude in general has crushed whatever feeling I had left. Certain people such as Cratylus are magnets for this sort of thing. Though he's surely not the only reason. Call them trolls if you will. It's about the only term which fits generally enough to work. In any case, the pile of impatient complaints, flamewars, the barrage of people who seem to hate me for no other reason than to be hateful has finally become enough.

As you know already if you've visited before or heard elsewhere, I closed Alsherok's doors last month. What follows now is the closing of the AFKMud project itself. I am no longer going to be doing any form of development work on it. Yes, that includes patches, bugfixes, and even critical problems. There just isn't any more will left to fight. I have taken the last commit to the SVN repository and packaged it up. It's available at and With that also followed a Smaug snippet conversion of the AFKMud board system I had promised awhile back to a few people. The SVN repository for AFKMud has been destroyed, along with the one for Alsherok. If for some reason you needed something out of it, it's too late.

I promised some other people I'd patch up the IMC2 client code as well as the server code and upload those. That's the last MUD development project I have left. I do not intend to get involved in anything further. I will not be starting an uber-secret project to spring on people. So don't expect it. I'll still be around from time to time though if people need help with something. You all know where to find me if you need to.

One last thing. For those people who inevitably look for someone to blame, just stop already. You're half the problem and contributed heavily to why I'm doing this. I know telling people to go against human nature is silly, but hey. I can hope or something.

"Resistance is futile." -- The Borg
"Mother's coming for me in the dragon ships. I don't like these itchy clothes, but I have to wear them or it frightens the fish." -- Thurindil

Well. I guess that's that then.

I know what you mean, but you did an amazing job with the codebase and I will always be a fan of AFKMud and I may still develop stuff for it here and there for the hell of it. Thanks for your hard work!

Zarius! You old dog. Where have you been? A lot of people wondered if you'd vanished off the face of the Earth. I suppose you're just going into retirement/seclusion like me then eh? Pity. The community is losing a lot of good people because of all this.

I appreciate the kind words on AFKMud as well. If you should happen to release anything more for it, the site would be happy to host it.
